Wind sweeps through Chang'an, a thousand miles of frost,
Who has turned the mortal realm into a temple of asceticism?
Beacon fires of a chaotic age obscure the moonlight,
A century-old city wall turns into a graveyard.
Yesterday’s golden cups and lingering songs have yet to fade,
Today, wild ghosts weep beneath the slanting sun.
Mountain temples hold lamps burning ten thousand feet high,
Yet they cannot illuminate the dark depths of human hearts.
Some kowtow, praying for a better next life,
While others gather bones to bury in the vast wilderness.
Take one step forward, And the underworld draws near.
行一步,黄泉近;
Take one step back, And there is no homeland left to return to.
Looking back, only the coldness of an abandoned village remains,
The lights of a million homes have all turned to ashes.
Oh, Blissful Haven, oh Blissful Haven,
How many lives and deaths are buried in the wind and rain?
How many grudges and favors turn to chilling frost?
Oh, Blissful Haven, oh Blissful Haven,
Incense before the Buddha rises three thousand feet high,
It ferries across all others, But can never heal its own wounds.
The monk strikes the bell, shattering the night,
The scholar dips his brush, writing out desolation.
Heroes drink their bitter regrets in blood on the blade's edge,
Beauties hide their names behind the fragrance of wedding gowns.
The living walk the path of Asura,
While the dead still sing the tunes of yesterday.
The spring breeze blows down the roads of Chang'an,
Scattering a young man's dreams like dust.
We ask Heaven, but Earth stays silent,
天问地,地无声;
Ghosts ask the Buddha, but the Buddha hides away.
If you ask whether the Way of Heaven truly exists,
Then why do the common people always end up with broken hearts?
Oh, Blissful Haven, oh Blissful Haven,
Millennia of tribulation fires cannot burn it away,
Lonely souls weep across ten thousand miles of barren lands.
Oh, Blissful Haven, oh Blissful Haven,
Watching the mortal world as mere passing travelers,
Even white bones still cling to their old clothes.
Who waits by the bridge for an old friend?
Who guards an empty room in their dreams?
Who stands outside the gates of reincarnation,
Refusing to drink the Soup of Forgetfulness?
Oh, Blissful Haven, oh Blissful Haven,
Where is the ancient capital of Chang'an today?
Only ruined ruins and lingering snow fill the mountain ridges.
Oh, Blissful Haven, oh Blissful Haven,
If you ask what the true Way of Heaven is,
Though all beings suffer in this world,
We must still live like a beam of light.
Snow falls, Old friends pass away,
Generations of joy and sorrow are brewed into a jar of wine.
The Buddha laughs, The ghosts sing,
A handful of yellow earth, a lifetime of absurdity.
